It has been a long journey to writing my debut novel, but it has been a blast. From my initial idea when I was just 15 years old, it took a few years just to get beyond the first chapter. I had experience of writing poems in my spare time but I really didn’t know what I was doing when it came to writing a full length novel.
I would not suggest this to anyone, but I got stuck on the first chapter for a long time, rewriting and rewriting, as I just wasn’t happy with it. I should have just carried on until I had a completed first draft and then gone back.
The rest of the first draft was equally slow, as around studying full time and then working full time, as well as being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I found I struggled to focus on my writing in between everything. And so, I took a brave step into the unknown and went on a few solo holidays with just me and my laptop. I would sunbathe and relax in the day, and then write in the evening. I managed to get each edit complete on a holiday as well. I found I could really focus my attention without any distraction and eventually my novel was in a place I was happy with!
It has been a long process, over 10 years working on it until I was happy, but I can say it has been 100% worth it.
I am so thankful to the people who told me to keep going, that I could achieve this wonderful thing. If it wasn’t for you (you know who you are) I wouldn’t be here holding a copy of my published book!
